Torsion Spring Assortment

Torsional Springs

Torsion springs are coil springs with legs. The motion they carry out is in rotation, hence their name and this allows them to provide a rotational force (called torque) in a radial (round) direction. The purpose of a torsion spring is to provide a rotational force in the opposite direction when a load is placed on one or both legs. The force causes the torsion springs leg to travel (or move) to a desired distance in degrees of rotation. In torsion springs this movement of degrees is also called deflection or travel.

How a Torsion Spring Works

Torsion springs offer us stored energy, the release of that stored energy can be coupled to an apparatus, product or device thus giving you an infinite array of choices on how to release their energy.

Torsion springs exert a radial force. When a load is placed on the ¨legs¨ of a torsion spring, their “legs” are rotated which windings/twistings the spring`s coils. This allows the torsion spring to give us force in the opposite direction. The force or load on Torsion Springs is known as “Torque” which can set the desired action in place. Such as when a torsion spring in a hair clip provokes the opening and closing of the hair clip teeth to open and then the release of such force leads to the teeth closing as the torsion spring`s legs return to the original position.

Torsion springs can sometimes go by other names. They are also called spiral springs, torque springs, springs with legs, torsion springs, rotational springs, lift gate springs, etc. You can find all sorts of torsion springs and subnames for them as well. Such as: lift gate springs, small torsion springs, large torsion springs, light torsion springs, heavy duty torsion springs etc. Torsion springs can also be classified as stainless steel torque springs, music wire torsion springs, or simply metal torsion springs. There are also other ways to classify torsion springs besides their size and material type. They are also generally listed under whether they are custom torsion springs or stock torsions springs.

Custom Torsion Springs

Specialty torsion spring can be made of unique sizes and dimensions that are not currently found in stock. They can also be made of material types that you may not easily find in stock. Another advantage of custom torsion springs is that these can be made to fit in specific spaces or locations and if they are visible can be plated to your liking. This can also be a customization completed in stock springs. To learn more about plating options and other secondary customizations, read the following article Secondary Customizations

Stock Torsion Springs

Stock torsion springs are springs that are pre-made and already stocked and on our shelves ready for you to purchase. Unlike torsion custom springs these torque springs can be ordered online right away and shipped to your doorstep within a few days not weeks. There are many benefits to stock springs besides the fast turnaround time, such as lower cost, minimum purchase amounts, and the possibility of selecting a variety of springs to test and try out as prototype torsion springs. If you are looking for a stock torsion spring for the prototype stage or even if you are already manufacturing a device that requires them, you can take advantage of our incredibly low prices and huge quantity discounts at TheSpringStore.com our stock spring division online store.
