Online Spring Force Tester - Stock Torsion Springs

One of our most common questions from our customers is “How much force is my torsion spring able to generate” or “What is the Potential energy of my spring“? This is a question usually answered by the use of the Potential Energy Of A Spring Equation which gives us the Elastic Potential Energy of a spring. These Potential Energy Formulas tell us how much safe torsion spring torque, or safe torsion spring force and how much safe deflection or safe torsion spring rotation in radial degrees your torsion spring can safely go before it’s not safe.

The questions : Can my torsion spring rotate to “X” amount of radial degrees traveled without breaking at the torque I want? are all answered with our “Online Torsion Spring Force Tester”. To help our customers better understand the functionality of their torsion springs we have created the Online Spring Force Tester for all of our stock torsion spring products.  The main purpose of the Online Torsion Spring Force Tester is to show your torsion spring in motion, indicating the achievable torsion spring torque force ranges in green and indicating in red when your spring has passed its maximum torque.

Our Online Spring Force Tester will show your torsion spring at a certain amount of degrees of travel showing you your torsion spring torque force so you can test the springs torsional radial force with travel torque indicators like torque 1 and torque 2 torque inputs and see your torsion spring working within the safe full range of motion. Our spring force measurement tool is the first tool of its kind because for the first time in history you can see your torsion spring online in a “Full Range of Motion” on the computer screen letting you know your torsions springs maximum safe spring torque and your torsion springs maximum safe travel or degrees of deflection distance. This means you can see in real time your torsion springs maximum safe torque force and watch it “Rotate” to the maximum safe travel distance in radial degrees.

This tool is also available for our Compression and Extension springs, you can click on the moving image below to try them out.

How can you use the Online Spring Force Tester to help you determine if your spring can reach the force you need?

As you can see in the gif above, the spring is in motion to simulate how it will work inside an application.  All the travel shown in green is achievable travel or torque and when the spring reaches red it is at its maximum safe potential torque.  The rate on your spring, the force per degree of travel, is highlighted in red to the top left of the image.  Torsion springs have a unique method of travel.  In comparison to compression springs and extension springs that extend linearly, torsion springs work with rotational force. The torsion Online Spring Force Tester will show the spring in red when the maximum safe deflection is applied.

Using the Online Spring Force Tester:

There are a few ways to best utilize this tool.

You can pause the motion at any point in the travel by clicking on the pause button.   If you know you are looking to achieve a torque at 70 degrees of travel, you can stop the spring at that point to make sure it is still in “green” range.

Spring Force Tester Rotational Load

If you know the exact torque you are looking to achieve you can use the torque boxes to the right of the animation to see if this torque is achievable. The program will automatically show you the max torque when you enter a value.

When you enter a “green” value the spring will stop at that requirement to make sure it is achievable and the spring will be in green at this torque.

For this example I am testing a max torque of 4 in-pounds.

Achievable Torque Torsion Springs Working

What happens if I put in a value that is not safe?

If you attempt to show a torque that is not achievable with this stock spring, your value will show up in red both on the spring diagram

If I put in 5 in-pounds for an T2 it will automatically default back to the max torque of 4.7717 in-lbs and the spring will show in red on the graphic when it hits maximum torque.

Value enter is too high, automatically defaults back to max torque

Spring is now red at max torque

Please also note the “inner diameter after deflection” on the diagram.  This is an important value if your torsion spring is fitting over a shaft.

Non Achievable Load Torsion Springs

Currently the Online Spring Force Tester is available on all of our stock torsion springs. You can see the animation on any of our torsion spring stock part numbers.  We are working to update the Online Spring Force Tester to be available on custom designs, this will be launching soon.

Once you know this spring will work for your application you can share the animation with yourself via email or other colleagues or you can add the spring directly to your cart to purchase online.  Super simple and fast.
